The department of higher education has impressed upon all college principals in the Valley to ensure punctuality of students and staff after complaints of low attendance.
In a written communication, Under Secretary, higher education department, Shabir Ahmad Baba has asked the colleges to observe punctuality week from April 1.
“It is impressed upon all principals of government degree colleges to observe punctuality and regularity in respect of both students and staff. Further, punctuality week may be observed between April 1 and April 6,” it read.
The colleges have been asked to monitor punctuality during the week and also check attendance of staff and students. The institutions have also been asked to give the best punctuality award to five students who remain punctual during the academic session.
“Workshop, symposia and debate on punctuality (should be held). All principals of government degree colleges shall ensure that the circular instructions are implemented in letter and spirit and the compliance report is submitted to the administrative department,” it said.
Earlier, there were complaints that the attendance of students in the colleges across south Kashmir was nearly zero per cent.
“Students are taking attendance lightly. Some of them do not even show up for the whole year, which discourages other students,” said Bilqees Jan, a teacher. “The colleges must get tough so that the students attend classes.”
