Jammu, January 28

Gojri artistes from different parts of the state today mesmerised the audience at Abhinav Theatre. The musical programme was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in collaboration with Doordarshan Kendra.

Welcoming the guests, Dr Javaid Rahi, chief editor of academy, said the main objective of the programme was to propagate the richness of Gojri folk and light music among the new generation. He said tribal music was facing tremendous threats from rapid development, satellite channels and globalisation and there was an urgent need to document its centuries’ old traditions in the audiovisual form.

Prominent writer and poet Farooq Nazki in his inaugural remarks said the Gojri was having rich traditions of music and performing arts and reflected diverse shades of the Gujjar culture.
