Srinagar: The J&K Football Association (JKFA) on Friday objected to the proposal to merge the J&K State Sports Council (JKSSC) with the Youth Services and Sports (YSS), saying it would have an “adverse effect” on the promotion of sports in the state. “It has been learnt that the government is all set to merge the JKSSC, the only advisory body on sports in the state, with the YSS. What the authorities don’t know that if the amalgamation happens, it will have an adverse effect on sports promotion,” a JKFA statement said after a meeting chaired by president ZA Thakur. Stating that while the mandate of the YSS was only to deal with students, it said the chain of functioning of the state associations, on the other hand, went right up to sports bodies across the world. “To quote an example of this….the JKFA is affiliated to the All India Football Federation, which is associated with the Asian Football Confederation and then to FIFA. This procedure is applicable to all state associations organising various domestic/national-level competitions under the supervision of the JKSSC,” it said, while pointing out that its merger with the YSS “can have far reaching consequences on sports infrastructure and human resources involved in it”.
