Jammu, October 31
The Governor’s administration on Wednesday appointed Dilbag Singh as the full-time Director General of Police (DGP) of the J&K Police.
According to an official order issued by the home department on Wednesday, the sanction was accorded to the appointment of Dilbag Singh as the DGP, J&K. He shall also hold additional charge of the posts of DGP (Prisons) till further orders and Director, Fire and Emergency Services, J&K, till December 31, 2018.
The decision to appoint Dilbag Singh as the full-time DGP was taken in a meeting of the State Administrative Council held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik.
A native of Kot Dharam Chand Khurd village in Tarn Taran of Punjab, Dilbag Singh was appointed as an interim DGP by the administration on September 6, 2018, in place of SP Vaid, who was posted as Transport Commissioner.
A day after appointing Dilbag Singh, the J&K Government had approached the Supreme Court on September 7, 2018, to explain the reason behind this appointment without consulting the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as mandated by the apex court in July this year.
The Supreme Court had on September 20 allowed Dilbag Singh to continue as the acting DGP of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the apex court had asked the UPSC to send a panel of police officers to Jammu and Kashmir in five weeks for appointment of a regular DGP.
Dilbag’s name has figured among the panel of officers approved by the UPSC for the coveted position. The UPSC had convened a meeting on October 26 to shortlist probables for the post after the J&K administration sent a panel of six officers to it last month.
