Srinagar, July 8
Amid heightened tension, normal life was affected across the Kashmir valley on Sunday, marking the second death anniversary of militant commander Burhan Wani.
Due to the apprehensions over the law and order situation in Kashmir, the Amarnath yatra was suspended from Jammu. However, the pilgrims paid obeisance at the cave shrine via both Pahalgam and Baltal.
On July 8, 2016, Burhan Wani, the poster boy of new- age militants, was killed along with two associates in a gunfight with security forces at Kokernag in Anantnag. His killing led to massive unrest in Kashmir in which nearly 80 people were killed.
The joint resistance leadership — Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik — had called for a shutdown on Sunday and a public meeting at Tral.
Meanwhile, curfew-like restrictions were put in place in many parts of the Valley to thwart any public meeting in Burhan’s native town. A large number of police and Central Armed Police Force personnel were deployed in Tral and the roads leading to the town were sealed. Restrictions were also imposed in Pulwama and the old city areas in Srinagar. Mobile Internet services were suspended in the Valley since Saturday evening.
