Yasin Malik remanded in judicial custody till May 24

A Delhi court on Wednesday sent JKLF chief Yasin Malik, arrested in a case related to funding of separatists and terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir, to judicial custody till May 24.
Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Syal also sought reply from the defence counsel on a plea of the Tihar Jail authorities seeking to produce Malik through video conference due to security concerns.
The court had sent Malik to NIA custody. He was brought to the national capital after a court in Kashmir granted his transit remand to the National Investigation Agency. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has reserved its judgment on a CBI plea for reopening three-decade-old cases in which Malik was an accused.
The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief is facing charges of kidnapping and murder for being allegedly involved in abducting Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 1989, and killing of four Indian Air Force personnel in 1990. The JKLF was recently banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
SHRC issues notices to govt on Malik’s detention
The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Wednesday issued notices to the Jammu and Kashmir Government on the detention of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Following a petition filed before the SHRC by human rights activist Ahsan Untoo, the rights body issued the notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, asking them to submit a detailed compliance report regarding Malik’s detention. The petition said the shifting of Malik’s custody by the state government to the NIA was illegal.
The notice was issued by SHRC chairman Justice (retd) Bilal Nazki.
The petitioner said Malik was not able to even speak when his lawyer had met him in a hospital in Delhi on April 20. “This has created serious apprehensions about the well-being of Malik, who is a political leader,” the petitioner said. — PTI/IANS
