Members of the Maratha community under the banner of the Maratha Kranti Morcha have announced that they would hold a jail bharo andolan on Wednesday as part of their protests to demand reservation in educational institutions and government jobs.
In a statement released here, MKM said the jail bharo andolan would be held at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai. Apart from quotas for the community, the MKM is demanding the withdrawal of cases filed against protesters belonging to the community in the past few days. They are also demanding the resignation of MLAs who allegedly made statements against the Maratha community.
In the statement MKM leader Amol Jadhavarao accused the government of trying to fool the community by announcing that some of their demands would be accepted. He said the government was yet to issue a written order accepting demands of the community even after an all-party meeting in Mumbai last week.
Shortly after MKM issued its press release, the state government beefed up security arrangements in Mumbai and neighbouring cities to prevent any untoward incidents.
The MKM also announced that the Maratha community would hold a mega rally in Mumbai on August 9 to press for their demands for reservations.
