The Municipal Corporation’s (MC) ambitious project to sterilize around 10,000 stray dogs in a year to eradicate the growing menace of stray dogs would begin soon. The private company that was given the tender for the dog compound project to sterilize maximum number of dogs, will initiate the project in the first week of September.

The company representatives had a meeting with the MC Health Officer Dr Srikrishan Sharma and also inspected the Nangal Shama dog compound. Arrangements for keeping the dogs have also been enhanced.

Dr Srikrishan said earlier dogs were sterilized only after receiving complaints from the residents, whereas after the project is launched, dogs from every ward would be picked up and taken to the Nangal Shama dog compound.

For this the existing 80 wards will be divided into eight zones. The director of the company Dr Simranjit Singh said stray dogs would be sterilized with the USA-based technology.

Srikrishan also added that once the sterilization was done, the dogs would be taken back from where they were picked. A special mark would also be placed on the ears of sterilized dogs.

The doctors of the company had also assured the MC authorities that through this technique, more than nine six hundred dogs would be sterilized in an year. According to a survey report, Srikrishan said there were more than 15,000 stray dogs in the city and taking cognizance of the increasing number of dog bite cases, an immediate solution to this menace was the need of the hour.

Reportedly, dog bite cases have also been observed very frequently at the district Civil Hospital. During the last month, around a dozen of dog bite patients were admitted to the hospital.
