With the completion of training of the first batch of girl students in kicking and punching, the novel idea of Nawanshahr police has got matured to equip them with self-defence techniques.
A total of 140 girls of five schools and colleges were given certificates for acquiring training of Wushu at a function organised at local college today.
SP (H) Harish Dayama, who is the brain behind the project, said the motive behind the training was to build confidence in the school-going girls to face any awkward situation.
“Cheetah Fighter Club, Nawanshahr, imparted the training free of cost. The trainees demonstrated martial art techniques today,” he added.
He said: “During the four-week training, orientation lectures, unarmed combat techniques, demonstration and practice of basic punches, kick-defensive and offensive were told to girls.”
He said: “The training has inculcated the sense of empowerment and confidence in girl students and help to change the mindset of the participants.”
Dayama said: “Students of Amardeep Shergill College, Mukandpur; Sandhu Institute of Nursing Nawanshahr; DAV Public School, Nawanshahr; Government Girls Senior Secondary School Balachaur; Maharaj Lal Dass Bhuri Wale College, Tapparian, got the training in the first batch.”
He said the second batch would be started in January and the registration had been opened with the ‘Saanjh Kendras of Banga, Nawanshahr and Balachaur.
The SP(H) expressed gratitute to the founder of Cheetah Fighter Club and Saanjh Committee member Manmohan Singh Gulati and coaches Rajinder Singh Saini and Kuldeep Singh besides national-level girl players of the club to make the idea a success.
DPS Sandhu, director, Sandhu Institute; Gurjant Singh, principal, Amardeep Shergill College Mukandpur; Col Chuhar Singh, District head GoGs; and Inspector Verinder Kumar, in charge, Saanjh Kendra, were present.
