16 govt school students bag merit-cum-means scholarship

Students of the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar, Jalandhar, have bagged the first position in the district by qualifying the national means-cum-merit scholarship (NMMS) examination.

As many as 16 students of the school qualified the state-level NMMS examination, which was held in November last year. A test for the students from economically backward sections, the NMMS ensures Rs 500 scholarship per month for all those students, who compete against thousands in the state.

Among those who cleared the exam are Neha, Simran Kaur, Roopkamal Kaur, Prabhjot Kaur, Jasnoor, Jaspreet Kaur, Kamini, Shirin Sheikh, Deepshikha, Rajni, Kamaljit, Archna, Rajwant Kaur, Mahek, Priyanka, and Megha.

Principal of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar, Jalandhar, Khushdeep Kaur, said, “It is very unfortunate that some children are from very poor background, but by shear hard work they have revealed that one’s environment does not matter as long as one is willing to slog and sweat. I congratulate these students and wish them a bright future.”

She also congratulated subject teachers Deepak Kumar, Manjit Kaur, Meena Rani, Rubbi Bala, Karamjit Kaur and Sonika, who made an extra effort, to ensure that students cracked the examination. 

The Principal lauded Deepak Kumar and Manjit Kaur for their contribution and efforts. She said, “While there is this misconception that government school students can’t make it big, our students have continuously proved this wrong. Six of our students have cracked national talent search examination (NTSE) in January this year. Last year, 17 of our students cleared NMMS and PSTSE. Our staff works very hard for students.” 

A special ceremony was also held at the school during which the Principal gave away prizes to students, who cleared the examination.
