The Jalandhar (Rural) police arrested two persons who are accused of robbing people at gunpoint in rural areas here today.
The accused have been identified as Karamdeep Singh, alias Kamma, a resident of Mehraj Patti Karam Chand village, and Harmanpreet Singh, a resident of Bunder village.
Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, SSP (Rural), said a police team spotted the accused while patrolling near Malhiwal village and Bil Waraich village. He said when the police tried to arrest them, there was an exchange of fire between the police and accused. However, the police managed to arrest them, he added.
A case under Sections 392, 395, 379-B of the IPC and 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against the accused at the Shahkot police station.
For opening fire at the police party, a case under Sections 307, 353, 186 and 34 of the IPC and 25 of the Arms Act has been registered at the Shahkot police station. The police have also recovered two pistols, a 7.65 bore pistol, four cartridges and 10 live cartridges of .12 bore pistol from their possession.
A Swift car (HR-01-X-8101) and a motorcycle (PB-03-AQ-6283) were also recovered from their possession.
During preliminary investigation, Karamdeep Singh revealed that he was an active member of a gang, led by Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, a resident of Mudki, and Ranjot Singh Jodha, a resident of Kothe Guru Ke village. The police said he admitted his involvement in a number of cases registered against the gang.
Harmanpreet Singh said he came in contact with Karamdeep Singh through Facebook. Harmanpreet said he met Karamdeep when came out of the jail.
About a month ago, he, along with Karamdeep Singh, forcibly took away a Swift car from a person at gunpoint near a Sohana gurdwara in Mohali. About 15 days ago, they forcibly took away a Ford Echo sports car at gunpoint from Rampura, which they left after an accident. They also took away a motorcycle at gunpoint.
The Rural police have requested a commendation award for SI Amrik Singh, ASI mangat Singh and HC Shamsher Singh.
