The police said they received a tip-off that they were in possession of illegal weapons and could shoot Mota Singh anytime.

Harvinder Singh was the leader of the gang and the main motive behind killing Mota Singh was that Harvinder’s mother and Mota Singh’s wife were pitted against each other during the sarpanch elections and resultantly, Mota Singh’s wife won, whereas Bindu’s mother lost. Moreover, there was also conflict among the duo for getting the chairmanship of the committee of the annual fair.

The police said all gang members have a criminal background and approximately seven to eight cases of murder and fights, clashes were registered against them at various police stations. During preliminary investigation, Harvinder Singh revealed that in 2011, some people murdered his father and to take revenge from them, he formed a gang with his friends and killed his father’s murderer.

An FIR under Sections 115/129-B of the IPC and 25 of the Arms Act was registered at Lambra police station on Saturday and a raid was conducted at the house of Harvinder Singh, following which he was arrested along with Amrik and Dalvir. Two other gang members — Lakhvir Singh, alias Lakhu, and Harvinder Singh, alias Rahul, however, managed to escape.

Addressing the media, Rajveer Singh, SP Investigation, Jalandhar (Rural), said: “Pushap Bali, SHO PS Lambra, received information regarding the gang’s activities and conspiracy for murder based on which a raid was conducted on the instructions of SSP Navjot Singh Mahal.”

The police said raids were being conducted to arrest the absconding gang members. Further probe is on to know from where the weapons were procured and some more revelations are also expected.
