Hardly three weeks since Safai Mazdoor Union chief Chandan Grewal had been roped in by the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha poll, he today moved to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) when party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal visited his place this morning for his joining in.

As Sukhbir went to his place, Chandan had carpeted the road leading to his house with flowers. A prominent Valmiki leader, Chandan had done the same for Sukhbir ahead of the 2012 poll but he had not joined then. He finally quit his job in the Municipal Corporation ahead of the 2017 poll and was the Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Kartarpur.

On April 13, the Congress issued a release with photographs that Chandan had joined in the presence of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar. Hours later, Chandan had announced that it was only a meeting and formal joining in would follow later. He had sought an assurance to contest the Adampur Assembly seat but then dissenting leader MS Kaypee returned to the party. With no commitment to him, Chandan refused to join.

But today, Grewal said he had joined the SAD without any prior commitment.
