Back after an 18-month sabbatical, which had both the Mumbai and the Punjabi film industries steeped in speculations about his whereabouts and the cause for his absence – with a section of the eager, sensationalist media even whipping up rumours about his death – singer Yo Yo Honey Singh is back with a bang with his lean, snazzy commando look in his upcoming film, ‘Zorawar’.

Opening about the ‘very dark moments’ of his life that he just left behind, while speaking to the media today, the pop sensation said even his darkest phase was nevertheless creative, giving him hits like ‘dheere dheere se meri zindagi me anaa’, which recently won him an illustrious music award.

Speaking on his character in Zorawar, he said, “I play an army person in it. It’s a very patriotic character. Its a family film, an action thriller and I did all my action in it. Right after I’d been busy shooting videos and 5-6 were done, Zorawar’s script came to me. The time was right, I needed a break and many songs were ready. So I went for it.” The film releases on May 6 all over India.

While Honey Singh has also been back to business amidst controversial comparisons drawn between upcoming film Udta Punjab’s character Tommy Singh and himself, the singer said he felt ‘bright’ and was looking forward to a host of songs he had done.

Questioned on whether his sabbatical had changed him, he said, “I don’t think there has been any change in me. Whatever happened, just happened. It was a sad and very dark moment of my life. But right now, I’m very bright. I can also tell you that I wrote a couple of songs during that time, which I’m going to release. In a moment, when a person can’t even talk or drink or eat, I wrote a song. I recorded it by myself on the phone. Even for ‘dheere dhere’, which is a product of this time, I got an award - the best pop song of the year.”

On why all Punjabi singers like Gippy Grewal, Diljit Dosanjh and him go for movies from singing eventually, he says, “Yes they do. Roti de naal koi sweet dish vi de reha tan ki problem hai? (if someone offers dessert with food, who would mind?). Diljit, Gippy and also Amarinder Gill, all three of them are great actors and thorough professionals.”

On his pick between Bollywood and Pollywood, the rapper said, “I see more love over here in Punjab. And even in Bollywood, if you see whether it’s mainstream or off-screen, the big names are all Punjabis. And it’s been like that since ages - from Chopras to Kapoors.

Questioned over his priorities, he admitted, “Undoubtedly music shall always be a priority for me. Acting was just an enjoyable but nonetheless difficult ‘panga’ I took. It is tough, you have to remember your own dialogues. But songs are your thoughts, your own baby.”

Honey Singh also went to Lovely Professional University and performed for the students. He was accompanied by VJ-turned actress Gurbani Judge (Bani J), acclaimed veteran actor Pawan Malhotra, singers Jazzy B, Prabh Gill, Ranjit Bawa, Mankirat Aulakh, Guru Randhawa, Alfaaz and Kaur B. Known for his energetic performances, Honey Singh performed on songs from his forthcoming film ‘Zorawar’ like ‘Raat Jashan Dee’, ‘Call Aundi’, ‘Ishk Khudai’ ‘Superman’ along with his famous numbers ‘Angrezi Beat Te’, ‘Lungi Dance’, ‘Party All Night’ and more. Honey Singh shared: “I am seeing LPU as a great and multicultural university where I am performing not only in front of my Indian fans, but fans from other countries also. I hope my upcoming works and songs will also keep on speaking for me through your wishes. I am indeed much excited to perform at LPU stage on my old and new songs which young fans like you have loved and made them hits. I advise you to put your hundred percent in all of your endeavours to rise in your life.”
