Jalandhar, October 25
Perhaps making use of the ample space under Domoria Railway Overbridge after a long time, the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar, which had already constructed a night shelter here a few years ago, has now also raised a sewa kendra and a fire sub-office at the place.
While the sewa kendra is functional and is of much use to passersby and residents of congested areas in the vicinity, the fire sub-office is in its final stages of work.
Besides an office building, a parking lot for the fire extinguishing vehicles too has been set up under the bridge.
Earlier, anti-social elements had been using the site for all wrong works, but the construction of offices has now come as a deterrent for them. Besides, there is no risk of the space being encroached upon by social or religious bodies (since the railway station falls nearby and there is a heavy footfall around the area).
Mayor Sunil Jyoti said there were plans to make proper use of spaces under other bridges too. “We are going to allot a space to the street vendors under the new government policy under Lyallpur Khalsa College ROB and under DAV College ROB soon. The area will be properly grilled and there will be just one entry and exit in a safe corner so that there is no traffic hazard around the area,” he said.
He added that the area underneath the Lamma Pind flyover and the Pathankot flyover too was being beautified.
“We are making it look greener. We will get pillars painted there just the way we have beautified the area under BMC Chowk.”
