A 52-year-old police officer died in a road accident in front of Gate No. 4 of the Punjab Armed Police complex here on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Ashwini Dutta and he was working as a computer assistant at the PAP complex. His son Priyanshuk said his father left the home for the market to get his physiotherapy done.

“My father used to go to the market in the evening every day. However on Wednesday, he left the house in the afternoon to avoid heavy rush on the road in the evening,” added Priyanshuk.

CCTV footage retrieved from the spot showed that as soon as he came out of the main gate of the PAP complex, he looked towards his right to see traffic before crossing the service lane to enter the national highway.

However, a school bus coming from the opposite side hit him from behind and he sustained injuries. He was taken to a private hospital where he breathed his last.

ADGP Kuldeep Singh, Armed Battalions, PAP, said the authorities were making efforts to safeguard the entry and exit points of the complex in view of the ongoing four-laning project of National Highway 1A. — TNS
