Shiromani Akali Dal Istri Wing (women’s wing) president Bibi Jagir Kaur today visited the family of senior deputy mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia, who was sent to jail yesterday following his conviction in a 20-year-old brawl case involving the then MC Joint Commissioner Krishan Kumar.

The senior Akali leader met Bhatia’s wife Jaspal Kaur and daughter Preeti to show her solidarity with the family after the recent development.

Bibi Jagir Kaur, when asked about the party’s move after Bhatia’s conviction, said the party would abide by the law and would act accordingly after taking legal opinion over the issue.

As Bhatia has been sentenced to only two-year imprisonment, he can retain the post after getting bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

While congress has demanded a resignation from Bhatia on moral grounds after his conviction, his family said he had done nothing wrong except for fighting for the rights of the people.

“The party has extended full support to us at this time and I am confident of his immediate release within a few days,” said Jaspal Kaur.

She, however, expressed concern over his health and said instead of the Kapurthala Modern Jail, he should be kept at the Civil Hospital as he was suffering from fluctuating sugar levels and high blood pressure.

Mayor Sunil Jyoti also went to the Kapurthala Modern jail to meet Bhatia. Jyoti, who recently came back from New Delhi after attending the All-India Mayors Conference, called it an unfortunate development and said he was expecting his urgent release.

Also, deputy mayor Arvinder Kaur Oberoi, along with her husband Kuldeep Singh Oberoi, met the family.
