A midnight blast in a refrigerator, possibly due to sudden high voltage, caused fire in a house at Ekta Nagar in Chauggitti here on Thursday.
The blast was so severe that it almost blew off the roof of the house. The fire took in its wake almost everything inside the house. However, despite residents informing fire officials about the incident, they failed to arrive on the spot.
According to Manjinder Singh Chattha, area councillor, the blast took place around 11:30 pm, possibly due to a short circuit. “We called the fire officials immediately, but they failed to arrive at the spot. It was after much effort that the local colony residents controlled flames by pouring buckets of water over it,” said Chattha. He further informed that according to the owner, there was a loss of around Rs 3 lakh as all electronic equipment inside the house got burnt.
Rajinder Sharma, sub-fire officer, denied having received any call pertaining to the tragedy.
