Lovely Professional University is hosting the All India Inter-University (National) Boxing (Men- Women) Championship at its campus, which will conclude on February 7. In the  event, 80 universities for women boxers and over 100 universities for men teams, from all across India, have registered to compete. Near 2000 boxers including managers, mentors, referees and officials are participating. On the commencing day, LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal bid his best wishes to participants. All boxers are competing in 10 weight categories-Light Fly (48 Kgs), Fly (51Kgs), Bantam (54Kgs), Feather (57Kgs), Light (60 Kgs), Light Welter (64 Kgs), Welter (69Kgs), Light Heavy (75 Kgs), Heavy (81 Kgs) and Super Heavy Weight (82 Kgs)- to exhibit the best of the game. The first phase of the championship will be up to January 30 for women competitions, and then onwards next phase for men bouts will last up to February 7.

Republic Day celebrated

The post graduate department of political science of the Kamla Nehru Collage for Women, Phagwara, celebrated the Republic Day on Wednesday. During the event, slogan writing competition was held. As many as 50 students prepared charts with motivating slogans. Later, a culturalprogramme was also organised in which all students participated. In slogan writing competition, Sukhmani and Manisha won the first and the second positions respectively. Sonia Verma and Jasmeen were declared third. Anu, Jaspreet and Gurpreet were also given consolation prizes. The principal, Dr Kiran Walia, extended her wishes on the occasion.

International conference 

A two-day conference on ‘Concerns and Challenges of Diaspora’ was inaugurated at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HMV) in collaboration with International Authors’ and Editors’ Forum, Business Press,Texas,USA. The conference is being organised by faculty of languages (English, Punjabi and Hindi) of the college on January 27 and 28.On the inauguration ceremony, the District and Sessions Judge, Raj Shekhar Attri, presided over the function. Padmashree Dr Surjit Patar graced the occasion as the chief guest. Ajaib Singh Chatha, chairman, World Punjabi Conference, Toronto, Canada, Dr Dalbir Singh Dhillon, director, World Punjabi Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr Satish Kumar Verma, Prof, Punjabi University, Patiala, Brig Inder Mohan Singh Parmar and Rahul Saini, fiction writer, were the guests of honour. The principal, Dr Ajay Sareen, welcomed the guests and said the conference was an interdisciplinary conference which had been organised to explore myriad aspects of fast proliferating discipline of diaspora.The principal congratulated DAV fraternity on Padamshri Award being conferred on Dr Punam Suri, president, DAV College Managing Committee, on the eve of the Republic Day. The concept note of the conference was given by Dr Adarsh Khanna, convener, English,of the conference. The keynote address was delivered by Prof Rana Nayar from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Padmashree Surjit Patar discussed the importance of Punjabi in our life and said Punjabi was now a language of seven seas. He recited a song ‘Ajj mere kolon kach da gilas tuttiya’ and mesmerised the audience. District and Sessions Judge Raj Shekhar Attri said: “Diaspora is dynamic because we are marrying our daughters with NRIs”.
