The Municipal Corporation (MCJ) of Jalandhar is all set to give a facelift to the BSF chowk soon. As the intersection is the first to be seen while entering the city both from the Delhi and Amritsar side, it is also known as the “gateway of the city”.
The project was inaugurated by BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia and Mayor Sunil Jyoti in the presence of prominent BJP leaders and BSF officials on Monday. The civic body is expected to complete the project within three months’ time and plans to dedicate it to the city on this Independence Day.
Talking about the project, Mayor Sunil Jyoti said the chowk would be given a facelift at an estimated cost of Rs 42 lakh. “While we will be installing the National Flag at PAP Chowk situated on National Highway No. 1A, we have decided to install the Tricolor neon lights fitted in a steel frame that would sparkle at night.
Also, we will have sparkling steel rods installed across the curvature that too will glow with the reflections of the vehicular lights,” said Jyoti.
He also added that the chowk with BSF carved over it will be dedicated to the grit, valour and sports achievement of the border sentinels having its headquarters in the city. He said while the MCJ would be constructing the chowk presently, the BSF would be maintaining it thereafter.
Though the project was initially part of the Smart City vision, the civic body had now decided to execute it on its own after it failed to figure in the smart city list. Also, the MC has planned various other projects like the development of the cycling track around the Bist Doab canal flowing through the city.
