Taking an initiative to save natural resources, the Jalandhar district administration, in collaboration with renowned environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal, today launched a campaign called ‘Save Water’.
During the inauguration of the campaign, the residents of Pannu Vihar locality in Basti Peerdad were today educated about the importance of water and the epidemics caused by contaminated or polluted water. The residents were also encouraged not to use water more than required.
The residents of the locality were also made aware of the water in Kala Sanghian drain getting polluted. The pollution has taken place due to factory effluents.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, Kamal Kishor Yadav said the international standard for water required for the daily need of one person is 135 litres, yet the people have been using more water than is required. He urged the residents to utilise water judiciously as Jalandhar comes in the dark zone in the groundwater depleting table.
Addressing the gathering, Balbir Singh Seechewal said initiatives for betterment should start from home. Therefore, the initiative to save water should also start from this place.
He said 70 per cent of the diseases are caused by unhygienic water that includes fatal diseases like cancer and hepatitis.
Regarding contaminated water being supplied to the residents, the DC instructed the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation to resolve the problem on priority basis.
