The government extends financial help up to maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh for cancer treatment for all three modalities namely radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgical treatment.

Doctors from the hospital said cancer was not a preventable disease, yet it could be treated if it is detected timely. Therefore, people get their screenings continuously for timely treatment.

“Punjab has seen an increasing number of cancer patients in recent years, especially in the southwest Malwa region, due to excessive use of pesticides and insecticides in farming,” said Dr CS Pruthi, chairman of Capitol Hospital.

He said in order to create awareness among the people, free health screening for citizens was being provided at the hospital till February 20.

Under the free screening tests, those who are more than 60-year-old can avail free consultation from cancer experts.
