To tighten security before the festive season, the Railways has started working on the installation of CCTV cameras at the city railway station covering all major areas including the platforms, along with the entry and exit point.
As per the information procured from the railway officials, the project to install CCTV cameras was proposed long back but due to some reasons, it could not be done. As the festivals are approaching — Independence Day just two weeks away, followed gradually by Dussehra and Diwali, it is important to tighten the security, feel the authorities.
“A total of 22 cameras will be installed, covering all the platforms along with yard area and two cameras each at the entry and exit point, both outside and inside the station. The cameras could capture images from as far as 1 km with clarity. The project would help curb crime in the city and also help keep an eye on the movement of criminal elements,” the officials added.
As per the information available, installing of cameras will be completed in the coming days. The room to handle the surveillance is almost ready and the first four cameras at the entry and exit points will be installed within a few days.
Station Superintendent RK Behl said, “The project has been proposed long back, the work is underway but we are still waiting for an official letter to begin the work. The execution and monitoring will be looked after and managed by the telecom department of the railways. The surveillance system will not only help in curbing the crime, but also help in providing evidence against the criminal elements, which would lead to their conviction during the trials in the court,” he said.
Behla said the police officials could watch the footage of the cameras from their mobile phones besides on their computers screens.
