Government schools in the district lagged behind in the Class X PSEB exams, the result of which was declared on Tuesday. Of the 30 students of Class X who have made it to the merit list this year, barely one from a government school.

While a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bara Pind, has bagged the 18th position on the state merit list, the student is 8th on the list of Jalandhar toppers. The district is placed at the 15th position among the 22 districts in the state with a pass percentage of 62.22 .

Of the total 25,222 students who appeared for the Class X exams in Jalandhar, only 15,692 managed to pass the exams.

Sources in the Education Department, however, claimed the district had improved its pass percentage this year as last year, it was placed at the 20th position.

Besides a student from a government school, rest of te students are from private schools.

Of the total 272 schools —121 high schools and 151 senior secondary schools offering secondary education in the district, only a single government school has been able to produce a student of merit.

Meanwhile, on the flip side, a little known school of Goraya has surpassed the collective strength of government schools in the district producing at least nine state rank holders.

As many as nine students of Excelsior Convent School, Goraya, have made it to the merit list. School students have grabbed the 10th, 13th, 19th, 22nd (two students), 26th, 27th and 30th positions on the state merit list. Harneet Kaur from the school is the district topper.

Other schools such as SD Public Senior Secondary School and Shaheed Baba Khushhal Singh Khalsa Model Senior Secondary School have also produced two topers each.

Sources in the Education Department said, “The district has bettered its performance as compared to previous years. As far as the performance of private schools is concerned, Excelsior School also got six positions last year. Government schools are doing better. Students of private schools in the state have managed to make it to the merit list. So, Jalandhar can’t be singled out in this phenomenon.”

DEO (Secondary) Satnam Singh could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
