Congress activists led by former minister Joginder Singh Maan and Balbir Raja Sodhi today held a demonstration and raised slogans against the SAD-BJP government for anti-farmers’ policies. They alleged that nothing was being done for purchasing and lifting of wheat from mandis. Commission Agents Association’s district president Kulwant Pabbi and local president TD Sharma alleged that no step was being taken by the government to address the problems of the farmers. They threatened to launch a stir if the issue was not solved by next Monday.

One booked for misusing social media

The police have booked a local Palahai Gate resident identified as Prabhjot Singh under Sections 295A, 506 and 66 of the IPC and Information Technology Act on the charges of misusing social media to hurt the religious sentiments of Dalit community. No arrest has been made so for.

Man held with poppy husk

The police have arrested Amrik Singh of Sarhal Kalan and recovered 10-kg poppy husks from his possession today. The accused was nabbed at a naka near Ghumman village.

Protest against MC

Tension in Phagwara continued for the second consecutive day after the alleged trespassing of a team of the Municipal Corporation on the premises of a shrine to axe trees in the Hargobind Nagar locality on Thursday. Hundreds of followers from Congress and BJP gathered at the site to oppose the team. MC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Sandhu later rushed to the shrine and met the head, Mahant Vasudeva Ji Maharaj, and assured action to defuse the tension. Meanwhile, the followers lodged a written complaint with the city police against Mayor and MC staff.

NGO adopts 700 students

The Helping Hands Organisation headed by Harminder Singh Basra and Punjab Radio, London, yesterday adopted 700 students of 30 different schools and sponsored their educational expenditures in a function held at Prime Resorts on Friday. Cheques worth Rs 3.5 lakh were given to the schools managements for the education of poor students, who were also provided clothes and books for their studies by chief guest former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Som Parkash. —OC
