Crusade to be launched for bridging gap in sex ratio at birth: DC

Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma today announced to launch a crusade for bridging the gap in the sex ratio at birth (SRB) in the district.
Addressing a gathering at a function organised to launch the Golden Memories Card scheme for the newborn girl child at HMV College here today, the DC said as per figures, the SRB in 2016-2017 was 897/1000 but due to the concerted efforts of the district administration, it rose to 915/1,000 in November last year.
He said though the results were slightly encouraging, a lot more needs to be done to bridge the gap further. Sharma said for this purpose, concerted efforts would be made this year too. The DC said the entire machinery of the district administration would be mobilised to ensure that the gap in the SRB was further reduced.
He said it was the need of the hour as girls had already proved their mettle across the globe by excelling in almost every field from academics, bureaucracy, sports and others. Sharma said on giving a chance, girls had proved that they could overcome any hurdle in life to bring laurels for the country, state and society.
The DC said the district administration was duty-bound to wipe out the menace of female foeticide and provide equal opportunities to the girl child for growth and development. Soliciting the support of the public in the cause, he said the gigantic task could not be accomplished without their active support and cooperation.
Sharma asked the people to come forward and support the initiatives of the state government and district administration for education, growth and empowerment of the girls.
Congratulating Shahkot Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Navneet Kaur Bal for launching the Golden Memories Card scheme, he said these cards would preserve the cherished moments of girl child’s life, besides ensuring her overall growth through a planned and healthy life.
In her address, the SDM said the primary motive of introducing the card was to ensure the proper upkeep of the record of every girl child taking birth in the sub-division and proper upbringing of every girl child.
She said the card to be issued on the pattern of ‘Baby book’ and it would have the first photo of the baby. Bal added the card would also have the details of the family in the form of the family tree. Besides the card would have the complete immunisation and nutritional schedule for initial years of the baby to ensure the comprehensive development of the girl child, the SDM added.
Earlier, HMV College principal Dr Ajay Sareen welcomed the dignitaries. On the occasion, the DC also handed over cards to parents of newborn babies. He also felicitated the bright girl students who have excelled in the field of academics and sports.
District Programme Officer Amarjeet Singh Bhullar, District Guidance Counsellor Surjit Lal, Deputy District Education Officer Gurpreet Kaur, Director RUDSET Jagdish Kumar and Principal of Meritorious School Raman were present on the occasion.
