The officer of 2014 batch, Amrit Singh, said at Nakodar, “I have inherited the legacy of serving people as my maternal grandfather was an IAS officer of Punjab cadre. I did BA (Hons) Economics from Miranda House, Delhi University, MA Sociology from the Delhi School of Economics and MA Economics from the IGNOU. I grew up in an environment where my father, an IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, and my mother, an Indian Defence Estate Officer, worked enthusiastically for the well-being of people. On a number of occasions, I experienced that my parents gave up their personal lives for the larger good as they felt responsible for the betterment of others.”

Amrit Singh said she had role models in her life at a young age and she idolised them which paid off.

She talked about her initiatives such as ‘Saadiyan Dhian’ and ‘Saada Maan’ scheme under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative.

The SDM said, “Every girl should realise that this is the time to equalise themselves to boys and to realise their strength from within. Nature doesn’t discriminate between genders and girls need to change this rather than feeling lesser than men. Girls should optimise their abilities and excel, which will act as a catalyst to change society. Girls just need to feel empowered and show faith in themselves.”

Tomorrow, ACP Deepika Singh is scheduled to interact with students at the St Soldier College of Management, Mithu Basti.

Nawanshahr Deputy Commissioner Sonali Giri today initiated a unique step towards a social change under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ week. She greeted as many as 30 mothers of newly born girls with the specially designed greeting cards along with sweets and other gifts at the Civil Hospital. The greeting cards have the footprints of their newly born daughters as mark of the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi.

Addressing the gathering, she exhorted all sections of society put in concerted efforts for bringing in a change in the mind set of society towards the girl child.

“Gender equality is the need of the hour and it is our moral duty to ensure equal rights to the girl child”, said the DC, while adding that the worshiping of girls (Kanya Pujan) was their age-old legacy and it should be followed in its right perspective.

Civil surgeon Dr Gurinder Kaur Chawla, SMO Dr Harvinder SIngh, Dr Kuldip Rai, CDPO Savita Kumari, DCPO Kanchan Arora and others also addressed the gathering.

Earlier, an awareness Rally was taken out from the local Baradari Garden. ADC Ranjit Kaur and Assistant Commissioner (General) Anamjyot Kaur flagged off the rally. Students holding placards having slogans regarding ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ participated in the rally, which passed through the main roads of the town to spread the message.

SDM Shahkot Navneet Kaur Bal today exhorted the girls to come forward for shunning the tag of weaker sections of society through a focused approach and dedication for bringing the much-needed change at a greater magnitude.

She was speaking on the topic ‘The daughters of New India’, at the CT Group of Institute. The SDM said the girls were blessed with unbounded energy and innovative ideas, which they could aptly use for bringing the much-needed change in society.
