District-level function marks International Women’s Day

Without providing equal opportunities to the women in society, no country can make it big. Civil Judge Rana Kanwardeep Kaur said this during a district-level event held at the local Red Cross Bhawan here today.

RS Attri, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, said the first International Women’s Day was celebrated in New York with a view to empower women and make them aware of their rights. He said the women should know about their rights so that they could not be exploited or wronged against.

He also spoke in detail about free legal services available to women, compensation scheme for rape victims, laws relating to domestic violence and female foeticide. He said the women undergoing any kind of legal difficulty were free to contact the district court. He also said the department had also started a toll free number 1968 for the purpose.

On the occasion, advocate Harleen Kaur informed the women about the laws being made for the punishment and prevention of atrocities against them. Advocate KS Randhawa spoke at length about the schemes available for compensation to be given to rape victims. The District Legal Services Authority, Jalandhar, and the Saavi International Group also honoured women who made it big in the field of academics, sports and other areas. Students of Prayas School and those of Government Senior Secondary School, Mehatpur, were also honoured.

Meanwhile, a health camp was also held at the health kiosk, Madhuban Colony, Basti Bawa Khel, today.

Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan said the health camp was special initiative for women taken by the authorities. He said special health camps for pregnant women and children will also be held in urban areas. He added that the health camps will also be held at Lamma Pind, Garha and Maqsudan dispensaries on March 9, and Qazi Mandi, Basti Danishmandan and Bhargo Camp on March 10.

During the camp, 75 women, 46 children and 36 men were examined free of cost. Free medicines were also distributed.
