Jalandhar, November 22
The Special Task Force (STF) on Thursday handed over a cheque for Rs 25,000 as the first instalment of monthly financial help to the family of martyr Gurdeep Singh of Jalandhar. STF cop Gurdeep Singh had attained martyrdom in an encounter with drug smugglers on October 1 this year after which each employee of the anti-drug force — from Additional Director-General of Police (ADGP) to constable — donated their one-day salary to extend their helping hand to Gurdeep’s family.
A total of Rs 10,65,000 was raised for the family and the amount was deposited into the Martyrs’ Welfare Fund Bank Account, which was specially opened for the cause. Each month the family will get Rs 25,000 from the account.
On Thursday, STF Inspector-General of Police RK Jaiswal gave the first cheque for Rs 25,000 to the martyr’s father Jagjeet Singh and wife Navneet Kaur. He said Gurdeep had performed his duty heroically and died fighting anti-social elements and he would live forever in their hearts. He said they would be indebted forever to the martyr as he had laid his life for the country.
Gurdeep had been shot dead by drug peddlers in Amritsar on October 1. Posing as a customer, Gurdeep had contacted peddlers while in Jandiala with a team. The peddlers had asked Gurdeep to meet them at Beas, but later changed the meeting place to Jandiala. Three peddlers arrived in a car and a bike and opened fire on the STF team and a bullet injury received by Gurdeep proved fatal for him.
