After a few hours of the firing, the city police managed to nab the accused in the wee hours today.

The incident was reported last night whengangster Surjit SinghBitti cornered his rival gangster Bunty, alias Gand, near Ambedkar Bhawan and startedfiring at him. Later, nearby people raised an alarm and immediately took the victim, lying in a pool of blood, to a nearby private hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical.

ACP (West) RPS Sandhu reached the spot and launched a manhunt to nab the other accused.

Bitti, a resident of Green Avenue, was arrested a few hours after the crime, while a hunt was on to nab his remaining aides. A case under Sections 307 and148 of the IPC and 25/54/59 of the ArmsAct was registered against Surjit Kumar Bitti, his aide Inder of Geeta Colony and four unidentifiedpersons. The Swift Dzire car of the accused Bitti was also confiscated by the police.

Six cases of fight, gang-war and other petty crime were registered against the accused at various police stations of the city.

Bitti was also awarded three-year imprisonment in a five-year-old gang-war case in which the Dhall group and the Nanna group had a serious scuffle in Gopal Nagar over the possession of some property. Both groups exchanged fire and attacked each other with sharp-edged weapons.

ASI Avtar Singh had also sustained a bullet injury in the fight and he later filed a case against the duo groups for assaulting public servant. Surjit Singh Bitti belongs to the Nanna group. After the pronouncement of conviction a few days ago by a local court, except for Nanna, seven others, including Bitti, had been granted bail the same day.

Sources said both Bitti and Gand remained close friends for years. Just six months ago, Bitti had a scuffle with a relative of Gand due to which both friends turned enemies and were looking for an opportunity to take revenge against the other.
