Jalandhar, June 27
National Scheduled Caste alliance submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Divisional Commissioner of Jalandhar on demanding action for atrocities met on the Scheduled Caste community in Punjab.
One of the main issues was the recent decision of the Supreme Court regarding the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and demand to call for a special session of the parliament to quash the decision, citing this decision as a form of judicial adventurism.
President of the National Scheduled Caste Alliance Paramjit Singh Kainth said, “The SC/ST Act, 1989 should be inducted in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution, to prevent further dilution of the act easily. This would be a step in the right direction to build back the confidence of the community in the government.”
Other issues in the memorandum were; reservation in promotion, post-matric scholarship, and oblivious implementation of the stand-up India scheme.
