Jalandhar, January 6

It’s a wrap-up on dharnas by various unions after the implementation of the poll code of conduct in the state.

Some of the unions which had been holding dharnas since 2015 and did not relent even in the face of beatings and threats of arrest have now wrapped up their protests due to the implementation of the poll code.

Prominent among the unions are the Sikhiya Provider Union which had been holding a dharna in Mohali since 2015 in hope of regularisation. While the union did not relent even after their tents were uprooted and water sprayed on them during a December protest, they have put a stop to their dharna in view of the Election Commission guidelines.

While many state unions were also embattled with the government and had various demands especially in view of regularisation letters which they are still to get, the unions have stalled all their protest plans for the moment.

Prominent among those demanding regularisation are the SSA/RMSA teachers Union and SSA/RMSA office Employees Union, ETT teachers EGS/STR Union and a section of computer teachers. Embattled BEd teachers also recently stalled a dharna by them.

The dharna also forced unemployed BEd and TET pass teachers to climb down from tanks they had recently climbed atop in hope of recruitment. While some unemployed teachers had also sat on dharnas atop tank for a month recently – threatening suicides - and came down only after they got appointment letters, many others will have to continue the fight for a job only after the code is lifted.

Only poll duties, no protest Ironically, while they are not allowed to hold dharnas any more, many of these teachers will be toiling hard during the upcoming election duties – roosters regarding which will be released shortly.
