In all, 17 district students have featured in the state merit list, of whom students of Nehru Garden School and New St Soldier Public School have grabbed topmost positions. Of the 17 merit spots, 12 have been bagged by girls. In all, the district students have bagged the seventh, 13th , 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd positions in the state.

True to tradition, the topmost ranks have yet again been bagged by students of Nehru Garden Girls Senior Secondary School. Student Namrata has grabbed the seventh position and Shivani has bagged the 14th position in the state.

Aiming for scientific research

Originally from Nurpur, Namrata is among the rare students who couldn’t be held back by government education and problems at home. Studying at Nehru Garden Girls Senior Secondary School, Namrata is not only a topper but also a student with a clear focus on her future and a penchant for biotechnology and research, towards which she plans to steer her career. Crediting her mother Bhupinder Kaur for her success, she said her family had never restricted her in reaching out for her dream.

Speaking about her study regime, Namrata said, “I studied for five hours daily and almost for the entire day on Sunday and holidays.”

She also said if it wasn’t for her teachers’ support and care, she wouldn’t be where she is.“I never felt the need for any extra lessons as our teachers taught us so well,” she said.

Speaking on her plans, she said, “From the moment I studied the chapter on bio-tech, the subject has greatly interested me. I have read it over and over again.”

She said whether or not you study in a government school, your calibre makes your future. “I would like to take up scientific research in immunology.” Shivani, a student of commerce from the school, has bagged the third rank in commerce in the state (overall state rank 14th) and another student Namrata, pursuing the science stream, has bagged the overall state rank seventh in the XII standard exams.

Talking to The Tribune, Shivani said, “I give credit to my entire family and my teachers for providing their support to me. My father Sunil Kumar runs a printing press and my mother Kavita is housewife and without their support, I would not have achieved this.”

While Shivani’s brother also helps her father in the family press, Shivani, who was pursuing commerce at Nehru  Garden Girls  Senior Secondary   School, aspires to be bank officer in a government bank. A resident of Basti Gujan, speaking about her mantra for studies, she said, “I have never thought about planning and measuring my hours of study. Still I put in the maximum amount of time to study well. I did face many challenges, but the the result has made me forget them. My only aim in the future is to achieve my dream of becoming a bank officer to make my parents and teachers proud.”

Of the total 17 toppers, merely six are from government schools but their success stories are intriguing. From small villages these students and their hard working teachers have traced a course of success which brings a good name to the otherwise notorious government school education. There are two toppers from Nehru Garden, two from Government Model Co-Education Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar, two from Nakodar Government school and one from Bara Pind in the district.

Six make it from New St Soldier Sr Sec Public School

The girls of the New St. Soldier Senior Secondary Public School, Guru Ravidas Nagar, created history in the exams with as many as six of them bagging key positions in the district.

While her elder brother Dilamanpreet pursues B tech, Tarnpreet, who is originally from Shahkot, had also been taking tuitions in some of the subjects. Her school in charge Rupinderjit Kaur, greatly lauded by all students, bore equal credit for her success.
