Having done schooling from the Apeejay School, Jalandhar, Jayant pursued class XII from BIPS in Patiala. Living away from parents for the first time at a PG took toll on him for quite some. He battled homesickness but the teachers at his institute helped him make it through.

Credit: My parents, God, grandparents (who aren’t there anymore but continue to inspire me) and my teachers. While his parents Naveen Mehta – an administrative manager at a paint firm and mother Seema Mehta were always there for him, Jayant says they have been his support system.

Mantra: Always remain tension free. Pursue the subject that interests you. I studied and listened to music and read novels in between to give myself a break.

Shreya Malhan AIR-571

A student of St. Soldier’s Divine Public School, Mithu Basti, Shreya Malhan, who has been a topper all through, notched success with 571th rank in AIIMS medical entrance exam. Daughter of doctor parents, Shreya has had an inborn passion for the medical profession. However, she aims for a different stream than her parents.

Credit: Says father Dr Sunil Malhan (an endodentist) and mother Dr Sonika Malhan (a dentist) played a big role in her success. Shreya said her mother motivated her and that went a long way in helping her achieve great heights.

Schedule: Studying for eight to nine hours per day. Shreya says she used to prepare a monthly plan for her studies and also laid great stress on concentrating properly, no matter what the hours were for which she studied.

Future plans: More inclined toward matters of the skin, which she says fascinate her . Shreya plans to choose dermatology as her field of expertise in the medical profession.

Mantra: Stay dedicated and despite roadblocks or challenges, never get disappointed. Overcome the odds is her philosophy

Gurkirat Singh AIR-968

Son of Head Constable Bhagwan Singh and Manit Kaur, a housewife, Gurkirat said the taunts from his policeman father had a big role to play in his success and performance. He has a younger brother who is in class X.

Credit: A student of Police DAV School, Gurkirat said the less fee at the school had a substantial role to play in his success. Crediting his teachers and parents for his success, he said his father constantly kept pushing him to study, which worked well eventually. “You know how policemen are. My father would constantly tell me to push myself even when I was studying. If I studied for five hours, he would say I had studied just for an hour and if I watched TV for an hour – he would say I had done it for five hours. But at the end of the day, it was these squabbles which made me go harder.”

Schedule: It all depends on the situation. On some days, I used to study for six hours, on others for 12. Before the exams, I even studied for 14 hours a day.

Plans ahead: While his counselling is on July 5, Gurkirat has set his heart on being a cardiologist.

Mantra: One should be clear about the basic concepts. Never get discouraged about little things like tests. “There were times when I did not get good marks in the institute tests. But that doesn’t mean I was not talented. It is important to keep faith in yourself and work towards achieving your goal,” he said.
