A labourer of Jagatjit Industries Limited Hamira died while on duty in an accident that occurred due to alleged negligence on Wednesday.
The Subhanpur police have registered an FIR against the factory unit under Section 304-A of the IPC. The deceased was identified as Chand Singh, a resident of Dhirpur village in Jalandhar district. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.
After the news of his death spread, members of the Pendu Mazdoor Union, along with his family members and relatives, held a protest at the main gate of the factory. They were demanding Rs 50 lakh compensation and job to a member of the family.
They protesters held a dharna along with the body at the front gate of the factory yesterday. The body has now been shifted to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital. Continuing their protest today, members of the PMU blocked the approach gate to the factory. However, the police got the gate opened.
The protesters have also been demanding a case under the SC/ST Act. Apart from raising slogans against the factory, the protesters also demanded assurance on the safety of the labourers inside the factory.
The labourers condemned the local administration and Labour Department “for not listening to problems of the labourers”.
Speaking to Jalandhar Tribune, Sukhpal Singh, SHO, Subhanpur, said the body had been handed over to the family after conducting the post-mortem. Since the family members have been asking for compensation, we have called the management on the same. Further action will be taken as per the investigation.
