Lasara village gets infra push

Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary laid the foundation stones for several projects in Lasara village near here today.

These projects include fencing and grassing of the stadium at a cost of Rs 14.90 lakh, construction of the Pandit Bhagat Ram Shukla Memorial Park at a cost of Rs 4 lakh, Valmiki Dharamshala at Rs 3.32 lakh and a canal (khaala) at Rs 2.20 lakh. Trees are also being planted to mark the 550th Parkash Purb celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev at a cost of Rs 3 lakh.

Speaking on the occasion, Chaudhary said these development works would improve the infrastructure of the village, leading to better quality of life for residents. The works would be completed under the MNREGA scheme with contributions from the village panchayat. He also announced another grant of Rs 5 lakh from his MPLAD funds for interlocking of streets in the village.

He said Lasara was a village of freedom fighters and martyrs. People such as Shaheed Babu Labh Singh, Pandit Barkat Ram Shukla and Pandit Bhagat Ram Shukla made supreme sacrifices and dedicated their lives to the nation.

Later, the MP presided over the annual prize distribution function of Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Senior Secondary School in Lasara. Expressing happiness over achievements of students, he congratulated the principal, teachers, parents and children. Emphasising overall development of the students, he urged the teachers and parents to help children realise their potential.

“Rather than only providing information, we should focus on kindling their curiosity. We should teach them how to think, not just what to think,” he said.

Chaudhary announced another grant of Rs 3 lakh for two smart classrooms in the school. Another Rs 2 lakh would be contributed by the government. On the request of the teachers and parents for introduction of science stream in the school, he assured that he would take up the matter with the government.

Chairman Davinder Singh, Phillaur BDPO Ranjit Singh, zila parishad member Harmesh Lal, sarpanch Reshmo and block samiti member Ram Lubhaya were among those others present.
