Man crushed to death by speeding truck

A 30-year-old man lost his life in a tragic accident here this morning near the DAV College flyover on the Jalandhar-Amritsar highway.

Sandeep Singh, a vegetable wholesaler, was returning home at 11 am after some work when his motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck from the rear.

Ambulance fails to reach spot on time

Some passers-by called the ambulance service, but it reached the spot after 45 minutes of the mishap. Eyewitnesses said while he was taking a turn, the truck hit the motorcycle from the rear and crushed him to death.

They said they immediately called the police and ambulance but they failed to reach the spot on time. He suffered serious injuries in the lower abdomen and legs. He was lying on the road in the rain till some commuters took him to the Civil Hospital in an auto-rickshaw.

Doctors said due to excessive blood loss, he succumbed to injuries within minutes after he was admitted to the Emergency Ward. They said had he been rushed to the hospital immediately after the mishap, his life could have been saved.

The passers-by caught hold of the truck driver, who was reportedly drunk.

Dikshit, an eyewitness, said they had called the 108 Ambulance service at 11.20 am but even after waiting for nearly 45 minutes, the ambulance did not arrive. However, one of the 108 Ambulance was deployed around 1 km away from the spot. After reaching the hospital, due to the unavailability of stretcher they had to pull the auto-rickshaw seat to take him to tthe Emergency Ward.  The victim, a resident of Panj Peer Colony, is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter. He was the sole breadwinner of the family. The SHO, Police Station Division 1, said the truck driver failed to apply the brakes on time due to which the accident occurred.
