A married woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling girder at her husband’s house in Basant Nagar near Rama Mandi here last night.
Initially, there were rumours that the woman had committed suicide due to an alleged illicit relationship of her husband, but later her family members told the police that their daughter ended her life because of the poor economic conditions of her husband and in-laws.
The deceased was identified as Kiran. She was reportedly eight-month pregnant.
Station house officer Rama Mandi Palwinder Singh said the woman committed suicide last night when she was alone at the home. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.
The SHO said, acting on the statement of the girl’s mother Manjit Kaur, inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC were initiated by the police and the body was handed over to the family after conducting the postmortem at the Civil Hospital here.
Sources said the woman’s family members had initially told mediapersons that Kiran had committed suicide because she had come to know about the relationship of her husband. She had been forcing her husband to end the relationship, but the latter didn’t pay heed to her, resulting in her extreme step. However, as per an official statement, the mother of the woman later told the police that Kiran had committed suicide because of the poor financial condition of her in-laws and meagre income of her husband.
