Progressive farmer shows way to boost fertility of barren land

Sixty-year-old progressive farmer Sukhdev Singh Bhullar from Bhullar village of Kapurthala, has set an example for the farming community by adopting various techniques under land reclamation programme for improvement in the soil fertility of barren land.
Contributing to land reclamation of surrounding farmers too, Sukhdev, a matriculate, now cultivates 74 acres of land growing different crops such as basmati, spring maize, moong, oats, barseem and marigold.
For conservation of natural resources, he irrigated crops through an underground pipeline system which resulted in preserving of water by cutting down the losses through evaporation. He prefers to grow green manure crops and ploughs back the wheat residue into the soil for augmenting soil fertility. Being a techno-savvy farmer, he even utilises the mobile and internet technology for getting the latest rates from agri-markets, weather information and the latest agri-tech from different websites.
Dr Pardeep Kumar, District Extension Specialist, Farm Advisory Service Centre, claims, “Through self-experimentation at his farm, Sukhdev has concluded that the alternate process of wetting and drying of wheat seed followed by its sowing enhances the germination, tillering and productivity. — OC
