The schedule for the classes to be started at the meritorious school was released today. Classes for the meritorious school shall start from July 13 across the six meritorious schools in the state as well as the district.
While all 500 seats at the meritorious school this year have been filled, this year, to avoid confusion and chaos like last time, the students shall be called in batches of 175 (100 girls, 75 boys per day) to avoid crowding of parents and other problems. From July 9 to 11, students shall be called in four batches of 175 each, and everyday medical examinations of the students shall be conducted as well as rooms allocated to them. Thereafter, classes shall start from July 13.
Talking to The Tribune, DEO (SE), Harinder Pal Singh, said, “Last year, due to all students being called on a single day, some problems had been encountered. To avoid such problems, students will report in three batches of 175 so that the entire joining process stays organised. From July 13, their classes shall begin. From July 9 to 11, their certificates will be scrutinised, medical tests done, admission process completed and hostel rooms allotted, after which they shall join on July 13.”
While as many as 500 students had been admitted to the meritorious school, students from as far as Mohali and Tarn Taran have opted for Jalandhar during the seven-day counselling, which was conducted from June 24 to June 30.
In all, barring Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur, students from Mohali, Bathinda, Tarn Taran and Amritsar have also opted for Jalandhar as their chosen meritorious school in the state this year. The largest number of students, however, are from Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar.
As many as 100 seats (40 boys, 60 girls) for the medical stream, 300 (120 boys and 180 girls) for the non-medical and 100 (40 boys, 60 girls) 60 for the commerce stream have been taken by students at the meritorious school this year.
This year, while 329 total students applied from Jalandhar for various meritorious schools, as many as 311 applied for admissions from Hoshiarpur and 69 and 29 from Nawanshahr and Kapurthala, respectively. While last year, a majority of the students from Hoshiarpur had applied for the meritorious school in Jalandhar, this year a majority of the applicants for the meritorious school in Jalandhar were from the district itself.
Principalspeak
Principal, Meritorious School, Jalandhar, Massa Singh, said, “The merit school has been totally constructed and all basic infrastructure is ready at all hostels to take in students. The girls of the school shall be staying at hostels A, B and C buildings this year. Boys shall be staying in the two unnamed blocks allocated for them. With students divided in batches, everything- from parents’ visits to allocation of hostels to students is expected to run smooth this year.”
While as many as 96 rooms (one room seats six students) have been reserved for girls at the hostel, boys get 72 rooms.
A doctor visiting for an hour everyday and special cousellors should also be provided to students to attend on them properly during their stay there.
