Short film ‘Shukrana’ highlights real meaning of donation

A short film, ‘Shukrana’, made by city-based Gurkaran Singh, a film-maker, actor and writer by profession, highlights the real meaning of donation. The movie spreads the message of making donation that doesn’t bring a name for a person but how it changes one’s life and leaves a life-long impact.

The movie was first screened at a film festival in America in November 2018 and is now officially launched on YouTube on February 2. It is produced by Parminderpal Singh Khalsa and shot in the city. The story has been written by Satdeep Singh and Gurkaran Singh.

Talking to The Tribune, Gurkaran said the main objective behind coming up with the title, ‘Shukrana’, and highlighting the issue of donation was to spread the message of bringing change in society.

He said the story in the movie revolves around a wealthy businessman who sponsors the education of a poor boy. It shows when you donate for a cause that feeling was nowhere close to making donations of materialistic things such as air conditioner, carpets and furniture to community centres or other places.

He said a large number of people in the state, especially NRIs, give huge donations to Sikh gurdwaras and other societies working for the uplift of people which was indeed applauding but if 10 per cent of the same was donated to sponsor the education of the poor children, perhaps no child in this universe remains deprive of education. Besides, the education they gain might make them a successful person in future.

Gurkaran said after watching the movie, people would understand the real meaning of donation and would always donate for a cause, not to show-off.

He said within three days of its official launch, they had received a great response from the audience.

He added that people from the USA, the UK and other nations liked the concept and appreciated the story.

Meanwhile, this is not the first movie Gurkaran has come up with, he had done 15 short films as a lead actor with various directors before, including Soulmates, Jagah, Chabeel, Chaabi, Impact, An Afternoon Saga and Dress Code and had won various awards for his acting, writing and direction skills.
