Lieutenant General GS Shergill, Chief of Staff, Central Command and Colonel of the Sikh Regiment, visited The Sikh Regimental Centre for the last time as a serving soldier, before he hangs his spurs on October 31, 15 after 38 years of illustrious career in the Army.
He was bestowed with the Honour and Responsibility of Colonel of the Sikh Regiment in December 2013. Since then, the regiment has maintained and shown its glorious tradition of courage and dedication towards the service of the nation.
Lieutenant General GS Shergill handed over the Baton of Colonelency to a professional soldier of repute, Major General SK Jha who is approved to become a Lieutenant General.
Vajra Corps spokesperson from Jalandhar, Naresh Vig said befitting farewell was given to the Colonel of the Sikh Regiment as per the rich tradition of Army and The Sikh Regiment. The function started at Gurudwara Sahib, where the General paid his obeisance and sought blessings of almighty for the regiment. It was followed by Wreath Laying Ceremony at Centre’s War Memorial where he paid homage to the martyrs of The Sikh Regiment. He was then given the final Guard of Honour as the Colonel of the Sikh Regiment by a Ceremonial Guard of one Officer, two JCOs and 51 other ranks.
On the eve of his farewell, he released a documentary movie on the famous battle of Saragarhi, a saga of courage in which 22 brave Sikh soldiers fought against 10,000 kabailis on September 12, 1897 at Saragarhi (now in North Western Frontier Province of Pakistan) in which all of them had laid down their lives in the true spirit of The Sikh Regiment.
He also inaugurated an ecological park where he planted a tree sapling to signify the importance of environment in our lives.
