Jalandhar, April 20
Tension gripped the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here when safai karamcharis, who were on strike for the past few days, entered into a heated argument with the institution’s officials.
The matter further escalated when the workers accompanied by their union president Chandan Grewal levelled allegation on the dean of the students welfare of being drunk.
The rural police had to be called to the spot to take charge of the situation. Later, the police officials took the dean to the civil hospital where his medical examination was conducted to inquire whether he was drunk or not.
A police official said, “Doctors have sent the blood samples of the dean to the forensic laboratory in Kharar. Once the report from laboratory will arrive, further investigation will take place.”
Chandan Grewal, president of the union, said safari karamcharis employed with the NIT had been on strike against the decision of the management to shift the control of the workers’ salary to a n private contractor.
“Today, I was called by workers to initiate talks with the management. When I reached the spot and asked the dean to cancel the decision, he misbehaved with us and used foul language. Later, we found out that he was drunk and we called the police for investigation,” said Grewal.
He said on Thursday they would meet the SSP of Jalandhar (rural) Harmohan Singh to seek action against the dean who used castist remarks against them. “We will demand registration of case against the dean under the SC/ST Act. If the police will not support us, we will intensify our protest,” said Grewal.
Meanwhile, despite repeated attempts to contact the dean, his phone was switched off.
