In much delight to Jalandhar Cantonment area residents, an open museum, ‘’Vajra Veer Vatika’’, dedicated to the indomitable courage of Indian Army soldiers, showcasing saga of the Sikh valour and victorious battles of the Vajra Corps has been set up at a public park in Jalandhar Cantt.
Along with the installation of a mini replica of the Indo-Pak Border, the Ravi river, all major battles, including Battle of Dograi (1965), Pul Kanjri (1971), history of the Dera Baba Nanak Bridge and battle of Barki-Lahore, have been depicted through wall illustrations.
Besides, statues of brave heroes Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and Banda Singh Bahadur and models of the Surrender Agreement and the Lance Naik Shangara Singh attack on Pul Kanjiri have been showcased.
The museum is a modern, state-of-the-art, informative and educational set up that aims to bring enhanced awareness among the youth of the state about the rich contribution of Sikh heroes and among other soldiers on the operational front.
“This museum has become a major attraction for daily walkers in the Cantt. It inspires the younger generation and let them know the cost of freedom that the great fighters achieved by sacrificing their lives,” said Vedika, who was spotted taking pictures of the battle illustrations.
While talking to The Tribune, she appreciated the facilities created for motivation and recreational pursuits in the park by the Army, which she said would go a long way for the welfare of all troops and families and enhance their happiness quotient.
Another visitor Kavita said today’s youth had hardly any knowledge about the India’s historic culture, battles it fought and how it attained the freedom. “If you question any person today about the Battle of Dograi or Battle of Kanjri, I am sure 100 out of 5 would only be able to answer what was the battle about. Hence, such open-museums help people learn about unsung heroes and their history in a much better way through pictures and illustrations.”
Meanwhile, since the day this Vajra Veer Vatika was inaugurated, it has been attracting a number of people both from Cantt and Jalandhar city. The park in which the vatika has been set up is open to all and it also has an open gym at the right side of the entrance gate.
“People from nearby areas are coming for an evening stroll here to enjoy music which is played through loud speakers installed all across the road and have a look at the Vajra Veer Vatika. During evenings, the road becomes nothing less than a place of pure delight and relaxation for those who come here every day to relieve stress,” said Jaspal, a retired army personnel.
