Anupvir Kaur, Regional President, Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), said besides upgrading the Army Asha School for special children, her top priority would be to promote girl education. Her husband Lieutenant General Jagbir Singh Cheema recently took over as General Officer Commanding (GOC) Vajra Corps at Jalandhar.
"Though we in Army believe in equality of education and ensures it amongst our troops and their families, there is a further need to lay more emphasis over it so that no gap should be left anywhere," said the regional AWWA president. She said even now, many girls in Punjab do not have an access to the plethora of opportunities available in the state.
"With the region known as the education hub, I would like to ensure freedom to each of my girl child to choose her career and should avail the best possible educational opportunities available here," said Anupvir Kaur adding that AWWA through various welfare programmes makes the families coming from remote areas aware about the need of gender equality and the education of children, especially the girl child.
AWWA day celebrated
The 49th AWWA day was celebrated with great gaiety and fervor along with the welcome ceremony of Anupvir kaur, the new Regional President of AWWA. The families gave her a traditional welcome in the beginning of the AWWA Day celebration. Later, a poetry competition having 'Women Empowerment' theme was also held where she distributed prizes to all the winners.
Also, 'Naari ek Safar', an emotional depiction of a girl's entire life was also showcased during the event. The ceremony later culminated with the AWWA song sang by the all the officers and other families present at the venue. While talking to the families from the dias, Anupvir Kaur said that she is talking for the first and last time from a distance and it will not be there in any of the meetings to be held in future.
