Till a few days ago, all those whose name is Sonu, used to enjoy the fact that they share their name with celebrities, including singers Sonu Nigam, Sonu Kakkar or even Bollywood actor Sonu Sood. But a short parody enacted by Marathi girls now makes them feel a bit irritated every now and then.

“Kya hai ye Sonu yaar” was the reaction of Sonu Sharma, a housewife till the day before when all her friends started sending her links of new songs sung by Sonu. “I Googled and found a variety of them with a different narration but coherent, being in the same catchy style. I found that people from across the length and breadth of the country were singing satirical songs in their regional languages, all addressed to some Sonu.

Finally, I reached an original Marathi song taking jibes at the Mumbai civic body over potholed roads and figured out as to how it turned viral.”

“My friends are using the opportunity to tease me to the hilt, making their own rhymes and sending it to me as voice mail, on Whatsapp or as Facebook link  and I am not liking it. I am not even standing anywhere for even a short gupshup for I cannot stand it anymore.”

Says city-based businessman Inderjit Paintal aka Sonu, “Thankfully, not many people in my circle know about my nickname, else they would have surely involved me in this. In fact, I have never liked my name Sonu. I have had so many fights with my parents over choosing this name for me. I used to often ask them why they could not think of another name.”

“It is so common. Even girls have this name. But now, this name has been misused in the newer parodies being uploaded on the web every other day,” he added.

Congress leader and Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh’s Jalandhar-based OSD Sonu Dhesi, however, says he has so far been oblivious to the songs being circulated in his name.

“Ever since I became an OSD, I have stopped using my nickname. Ask people in Chandigarh where I am spending more time these days. They now call me Gurpreet Dhesi. Perhaps that’s why no one shared with me any Sonu song or else I would have been aware,” he said.
