2,850 toilets to be set up on Amarnath yatra route

Governor Satya Pal Malik, who is also the chairman of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, was on Monday briefed on the sanitation arrangements made for the upcoming pilgrimage.

An official statement said a shrine board meeting held detailed discussions in regard to garbage collection and its disposal, maintenance of toilets and baths, operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment plants at Baltal and Nunwan base camps and disposal of plastic waste generated during the yatra period.

“It was decided that all solid waste generated during the yatra shall be managed by the Pahalgam Development Authority, Sonamarg Development Authority and the shrine board in their respective areas. The waste will be disposed of in the identified garbage collection centres in Sonamarg and Pahalgam, where the required infrastructure as per the Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Rules will be put in place in accordance with the advice of the State Pollution Control Board,” the statement said.

Shrine board Chief Executive Officer Umang Narula said it had planned to install 2,850 toilets and 516 washrooms along with 150 bottle catchers and 30 bio-bins along the yatra area. The shrine board is also installing 1,515 dustbins in three different colours to segregate biomedical, biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

The meeting was informed that two decentralised sewage treatment plants had also been commissioned at the Baltal and Nunwan base camps.

Other arrangements in place

  1. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board has planned to install 2,850 toilets and 516 washrooms along with 150 bottle catchers and 30 bio-bins along the yatra area

  2. It will also install 1,515 dustbins in three different colours to segregate biomedical, biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste

  3. Two decentralised sewage treatment plants have also been set up at the Baltal and Nunwan base camps
