21-yr-old completes 110-km-long sprint

With his eyes set on completing a Kashmir to Kanyakumari run, a young athlete of the Valley, Hamid Aziz (21), today completed a 110-km run from here to Baltal via Sonmarg in Ganderbal district.

Hamid, who had shot to prominence after covering a 60-km run alongside Australian marathon runner Pat Farmer in a single day in March earlier this year, said he had set his eyes on completing a run from here to Kanyakumari.

“My plan is to run 400 km in spring 2018 and then 1,000 km in 2019. My ultimate aim is to run from Kashmir to Kanyakumari in five years’ time,” he said.

Today’s run was flagged off at Hotel Shahenshah Palace on the banks of Dal Lake early in the morning and Hamid completed the run in the evening. The run was organised by the Department of Tourism, Kashmir.

Hamid had recently participated in the 59th Senior National Championship in July this year in Andhra Pradesh. Besides, he had also won the state championship on December 9, 2013. Earlier, he had won all the inter-college road races in 2013, 2014, 2015.

After flagging off the run, Tourism Director Mahmood Shah said Kashmir had no dearth of talented sports-persons who needed to be promoted.
