With the harshest period of winter – Chillai Kalan - on in Kashmir, residents of Shahi-i-Hamdan Colony, Pandach, Soura, are facing problems, as the locality is without electricity for the past one week, following a damaged transformer.
The protesting residents today said despite bringing the problem of overloading transformer to the notice of higher officials in the Power Development Department (PDD), nothing was done till the transformer got damaged completely, leaving locals in complete darkness.
“Overloading of the transformer was brought to the notice of the executive engineer concerned of the PDD, Ganderbal, but no alternative arrangements were made by him. They didn’t even turn up on time due to which the power transformer got damaged completely. We are living in darkness for the past one week,” said a resident.
They said the space was made available for the installation of a new electric transformer and necessary electric poles and wire were also installed in the colony. “The poles were installed two years ago, but till date the PDD did not install a separate transformer so that the problem of overload could be solved in harsh winters,” the group of protesting residents said.
With a month to go for the annual exams, the locals say the education of the children has suffered a lot due to power shortage.
“The examinations are heading near, but the children are not able to study due to power shortage,” they said. The residents of the area appealed to Governor NN Vohra to issue necessary orders for the early installation of the new transformer in the area.
