Apart from being at the forefront of fighting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, CRPF personnel also remain ready to donate their blood whenever a need arises. During the recent grenade attack at the bus stand in Jammu, when more than 30 persons were brought to Government Medical College and Hospital, CRPF men were the first to donate blood for the injured, sending out a clear message that they are committed for the welfare of people. Once again, it is a talk of the town that the four-km Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover will be completed in the next two months. Since the work started in September 2013, it has missed several deadlines. The resultant traffic diversions and congestion in the area close to the city centre have been creating a lot of inconvenience to commuters. How can the flyover be completed within two months when a lot of work is yet to be done, asked a passerby. “Time and money have been wasted as the purpose could have been served with the widening of the road within the available space,” he said. Confusion over shutdown

A traders’ body on Saturday asked shopkeepers to keep their units open on Sunday to make up for the losses suffered due to bandhs and restrictions in the past. However, after the news of the National Investigation Agency issuing summons to Hurriyat leaders came to the fore late in the evening, downtown traders called for a bandh on Sunday. As a result, shops remained open in some areas on Sunday while business units remained shut elsewhere, especially in old Srinagar city. M Aamir Khan

Board exams right step

The conduct of the ongoing higher secondary part-I (Class XI) annual board examination by the J&K State Board of School Education for the first time has been welcomed by parents as well as academicians. They termed the previous home examination system inefficient. “Last year, a question paper was leaked during the home examination system. This raised questions over the role of schools while conducting the examination,” Tarun Kumar, a parent, said. “The conduct of the Class XI examination by the school education board will ensure transparency,” Sangram Singh, an academician, said. Mass transfers before polls

As the Election Commission of India was going to announce the schedule for Lok Sabha elections on Sunday, the education department conducted mass transfers on Saturday evening. As the model code of conduct will be enforced within minutes after the announcement of polls, the department conducted hundreds of transfers at the eleventh hour. These mass transfers have raised eyebrows. Dinesh Manhotra
